"On a winter's day, a small party of men and women arrive by horse-drawn carriage to a manor, side entrance of the Winter Palace. The narrator (whose point of view is always in first-person) meets another spectral but visible outsider, "the European", and follows him through numerous rooms of the palace. Each room manifests a different period of Russian history, but the periods are not in chronological order.."
If you are not interested in Russian history then this could be a very dry film for you. Cinematically it is quite beautiful with its sets and costumes. I enjoyed the long continuous shot, not a lot of people have the courage to do that. The film was filmed in the winter palace in Saint Petersburg. I enjoyed the authenticity of the film but everything else to me was slightly dull. I suggest this film to those that like Russian history.
